Livingston County is getting one of its first community solar projects, which will provide new energy options for residents. AES is bringing to life the Vermilion I solar project, which has been in development since 2017. From the initial planning stages to the ongoing processes of interconnection and construction, AES has overseen these projects with the expertise of their dedicated team of analysts, developers, engineers, and more.

Vermilion I is a 1.9-megawatt solar power facility that spans 21 acres. This innovative solar farm will not only generate clean, renewable energy, but it will also bring numerous benefits to the surrounding community. One of the key advantages of Vermilion I is its alignment with AES’ Illinois Community Solar initiative, which focuses on providing affordable, reliable, and efficient energy options to Illinois residents.

Community solar projects like Vermilion I allow individuals and businesses to save up to 20% on their energy costs by accessing solar power without installing panels on their own properties. Instead, residents and local businesses can subscribe to a portion of the solar farm's monthly electricity output to receive credit on their monthly energy bills. This model allows for broader access to clean energy.

The journey to bring Vermilion I to life has involved months of collaboration with local officials and community stakeholders. AES representatives attended multiple county board meetings and communicated closely with the Livingston County Zoning Board to ensure that the project aligns with the needs and priorities of the local community. As a result, Vermilion I is on track to be completed by July of this year.

Programs like Illinois Shines and Illinois Solar for All have also allowed for rapid renewable energy development in the state. Vermilion I is part of the Illinois Shines Program, a state-backed initiative to accelerate the growth of renewable energy across Illinois and provide financial incentives through renewable energy certificates (RECs), which reward solar projects for the clean energy they produce. These incentives are critical for the continued expansion of solar energy infrastructure in the state and help make renewable energy more affordable and accessible.

With its completion on the horizon, Vermilion I is a testament to the growth of clean energy and community solar in Illinois. As Illinois continues to embrace renewable energy solutions, projects like this will serve as models for how community-based solar initiatives can power homes, foster local job creation, and contribute to the state's climate goals.
