Faces of Solar: Cynthia Myers, Service Manager at Windfree Solar

Cynthia Myers calls herself the “Solar Princess.” She is a single mother and a fierce champion of the solar industry with over six years of experience as a certified solar panel installer. She takes pride in being a trailblazer as one of the first women in Illinois to receive their solar installer certification.

“When I first started my career in the solar industry, I’m not going to lie, I was really scared,” says Cynthia, Service Manager at Windfree Solar. “Climbing the roof to do an installation and seeing that I was the only woman up there was intimidating to say the least. But I figured, I’m already up here, I might as well show them what I’m made of.”

This mindset not only allowed Cynthia to excel in her career and grow professionally, but it also inspired her to become a mentor for other women interested in becoming installers and pursuing a career in the solar industry. Her dedication to the industry goes beyond just her own success; it’s about paving the way for future generations of women who might not have considered solar installation as a viable career path.

“It’s important to me that women see themselves in this field,” Cynthia explains. “I want to break down the stereotypes and barriers that might make it seem like solar installation is a ‘male job.’ The truth is anyone with passion and dedication can thrive in this industry.”

Cynthia’s journey into the solar industry began when she came across a flyer for a free solar installation training program. Today, she shares her knowledge with others interested in exploring a career in the industry by serving as an instructor for programs like the one that helped kick-start her career.

“What I love most about the solar industry is that there are so many free resources that make it accessible for anyone to have a career in the solar industry,” she adds.

Beyond the personal satisfaction of contributing to a sustainable future, Cynthia has a dream of owning her own solar company one day and employing installers from all kinds of diverse backgrounds. She hopes to pass along her crown and encourage more women to join the industry because she knows there is plenty of opportunity for other “Solar Princesses” to flourish in this fast-growing industry.
