Rock Cut Solar, a new community solar project in Rockford, recently broke ground and is expected to be operational by the end of 2025. Through the partnership of Summit Ridge Energy and Trajectory Energy Partners, Rock Cut Solar will provide clean energy to over 1,200 low-income community members. This marks the companies’ thirteenth project together.

Spanning 35 acres, the project itself is an expansive solar field that will supply 6.2 megawatts of clean energy and lower energy bills for Rockford residents. Trajectory Energy Partners contributed over $100,000 to Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity. Winnebago County community solar customers as well as Habitat for Humanity homes will be able to utilize the clean energy provided by the project, and local labor unions are set to help build the array.

Rock Cut Solar is a Community-Driven Community Solar (CDCS) project, meaning that it provides a more direct connection and benefits to the communities in which they operate. Kerri Asevedo, Habitat for Humanity Executive Director, is excited to see how this opportunity will benefit families in the area.

“Our community deserves an investment from our state legislature, from our city government, this is our time,” Asevedo told Rockford’s WIFR News.

Additionally, Summit Ridge Energy Principal Mark Rader said, “This project is a perfect example of Summit Ridge’s commitment to community-driven solar initiatives…we’re able to create local jobs and reduce utility costs for residents through projects like these."

Jon Carson, Founder and Managing Partner of Trajectory Energy Partners, is also looking forward to how Rock Cut Solar will bolster the community.

“In addition to bringing cost savings to Winnebago County residents who subscribe to the project, the project will bring jobs to the Rockford area and more clean energy to the ComEd grid,” Carson said. “Rock Cut Solar is a great example of how impactful community solar is in Illinois.”
